Four High Mileage Motor Oils Tested

The Petroleum Quality Institute of America tested four “High Mileage” motor oil brands. The results of the tests conducted on samples of the brands meet the SAE J300 specifications for the SAE Viscosity Grade listed on the product label, and are consistent with the listed API Service Categories.

Georgia On the Same Page as Missouri Regarding the use of “303” on THF Labels

As reported by PQIA on February 12, 2018, the Georgia Department of Agriculture, Fuel and Measures Division issued a Stop Sale Order for Tractor Hydraulic Fluid (THF) products in the market labeled, claimed or implied as only meeting the THF “303” designation. The department determined that all THF 303 labeled products shall be removed from sale in Georgia within 180 days of the date of the order.

Understanding that the state of Missouri also issued a stop sale order on tractor hydraulic fluid labeled only as “303” but does allow for the use of the “303” designation when it is preceded by the J20C, J20A, and/or J14B specification(s), PQIA reached out to the state of Georgia to see if they too make allowance for its use in this manner. Based on today’s discussions with the Georgia Department of Agriculture, Fuel and Measures Division, PQIA confirmed that it is acceptable in the state of Georgia to include the “303” designation on THF labels when the designation is preceded by the J20C, J20A, and/or J14B specification(s).

While it’s clear that Missouri and Georgia have taken action to help educate/protect consumers from obsolete tractor hydraulic fluid that has the potential to cause equipment harm, PQIA remains hopeful that other states will follow suit. This is because PQIA continues to see buckets of THF prominently displaying only the “303” designation in stores. With that, consumers are cautioned to read the labels on tractor hydraulic fluid and consider that there are no specifications available for 303 Tractor Hydraulic Fluids and, as such, products making only “303” claims cannot be tested to assure compliance with any known specifications. Further, the 303 designation is 57 years old and has been obsolete for 43 years.
