Consumer Alerts Issued on Five Motor Oils

cabnr

The Petroleum Quality Institute of America (PQIA) continues to observe two brands of motor oils in the market that consumers should watch out for and steer clear of. The brands are:

  • Mileage 365
  • Q Motor Oil

DontBuyGuy2The result of the tests conducted on samples of these brands show products that can cause harm to virtually any car or truck currently on the road.

The products tested lack any meaningful level of additives to protect engines from wear, sludge, and corrosion. Further, the levels of silicon, copper, and iron in the products indicate they may contain used oil and abrasive material.  In addition to these issues, the products are labeled in such a way that a reasonable consumer could believe they are multi-grade motor oils when in fact the actual viscosity range listed on the back labels is not consistent with any multi-viscosity motor oil as defined by SAE J300. It should also be noted that the labels fail to display an API Service Category or any other performance specification that would provide consumers with the information needed to make an informed buying decision.

Consumers are also cautioned that the name and address of the company responsible for manufacturing, packing, or distributing these brands is not shown on the product label, as required by the Uniform Packaging and Labeling Regulations. As a result, it may be challenging for a consumer to contact the responsible party in the event that use of the products results in damage to an engine.

The PQIA has found the Mileage 365 brand on shelves in Lima and Cleveland Ohio. In addition to observing the Q Motor Oil brand in Lima, Ohio, it is on store shelves in Sparta, KY.

The PQIA has reached out to authorities in the state of Ohio regarding motor oils with serious issues and to date, there has been no response.  Consequently, consumers are advised to be on the watch for, and steer clear of these and other products that PQIA issues consumer alerts on. Consumers are also advised to read the labels on  motor oils to make sure the specifications on the label of any products they consider meet the requirements of their vehicle. Further, contact PQIA should you have any questions or concerns about motor oils in the market.
