Heads Up – Labeling Issue

Petromerica Semi Synthetic passenger car motor oils display the API Certification mark, but are not API licensed products.

The PQIA reported on a sample of Petomerica 5W-30 it tested in January of 2016. Although the tests results showed the product met the SAE J300 specifications for the SAE Viscosity Grade listed on the product label, and was consistent with the API Service Categories shown, the report noted, “The back label on this bottle claims the oil is “suitable for use… where SN/GF-5 service is specified”, but does not claim to meet or satisfy these specifications and does not display any API certifications marks for these specifications.”

Following up on the 2016 PQIA report, we now observe Petromerica Semi Synthetic Plus SAE 5W-30, and other viscosity grades of this brand’s passenger car motor oil in the market that now display the API Certification mark, even though they are not API licensed. This issue has been brought to the attention of the API and PQIA will report back on the outcome.
