Results in on Samples of Prime Guard, Questron, and Two SGT. P Motor Oils

Most Recent Samples Tested

The following are the most recent motor oils examined by PQIA. Based on the tests conducted and product labeling, there are no issues with the Prime Guard Full Synthetic Motor Oil examined. There are, however, issues with the other brands tested. Most concerning are the Sgt. P. Motor Oil products.

The result on the Sgt. P. Motor Oil products tested show that these products contain no meaningful level of additives to protect an engine. As such, they are NOT suitable for use in virtually all automobile engines currently on the road and will likely cause harm to an engine if used. For this reason, PQIA issues Consumer Alerts on the Sgt. P. Motor Oils tested. See below for more on all three brands recently tested.

Prime Guard

Based on the tests conducted and labeling there are no issues with the Prime Guard Full Synthetic SAE 5W-30 Motor Oil examined. The results of the tests conducted on the Prime Guard sample meets the SAE J300 specifications for the SAE Viscosity Grade listed on the product label, and is consistent with the listed API Service Categories.

Questron

Where the results of the tests conducted on the Questron sample meets the SAE J300 specifications for the SAE Viscosity Grade listed on the product label, and is consistent with the listed API Service Categories. An Advisory is issued on the product due to the absence of a responsible party declared on the product label. In addition, the product is labeled as an API SJ motor oil. Motor oils meeting this API Service Category are intended for use in vehicles built prior to 2002.

Product: Questron Synthetic Blend Motor Oil
Viscosity Grade: SAE 10W-30
Labeled: API SJ

The results of the tests conducted on the Questron sample meets the SAE J300 specifications for the SAE Viscosity Grade listed on the product label, and is consistent with the listed API Service Categories.

ADVISORY: Consumers should take note that this product is labeled as an API SJ motor oil. Motor oils meeting this API Service Category are intended for use in vehicles built prior to 2002. Although not stated on the label, consumers should be aware of its limited use.

The label on the product tested does not comply with the Fair Packaging and Labeling Act (FPLA) and the Uniform Packaging and Labeling Regulations or the the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s uniform standards for packaging and labeling, contained in NIST Handbook 130. These regulations require that each package of consumer commodities bear a label on which there is the name and place of business of the manufacturer, packer, or distributor.

SGT. P. Motor Oils

Based on the test conducted, Consumer Alerts are issued on the two Sgt. P Motor Oil brands tested. Use of these products in virtually all automobile engines will likely cause harm to the engine.

Product: Sgt. P Motor Oil Synthetic Blend
Viscosity Grade: SAE 5W-20
Labeled: API SN/ILSAC GF-5

Use of this product in virtually all automobile engines will likely cause harm to the engine.

The results of the tests conducted on this sample do NOT meet the SAE J300 specifications for the SAE 5W-20 Viscosity Grade listed on the product labels, and are NOT consistent with the labeled API Service Categories. In addition, the organometallic additive levels in this sample are much lower than typical for API SN, or GF-5 oils.

The result of the sample tested in fact show that this product contains no meaningful level of additives to protect an engine. For these reasons, it is NOT suitable for use in virtually all automobile engines currently on the road and will likely cause harm to an engine if used.
